AVID-Advancement Via Individual Determination (elective) (Period 7)

Course Description

“AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.”

A

AVID is not an at-risk program. It is a program for students “in the middle” with the desire and willingness to work hard to achieve eligibility to a four-year college upon graduation from high school.

 

Student Goals: 

-Academic success in rigorous coursework

-Enrollment in advanced classes in high school

-Entrance to a four-year college upon graduation

 Student Responsibilities:

-Achieve and maintain a successful grade point

average of 2.5 or above while in AVID.

-Any class with a D or an F must be repeated.

-Maintain satisfactory citizenship /behavior

in all classes.

-Maintain good attendance (including tardies)

in all classes.

-Maintain the AVID binder with assignment/

grade record sheets and daily notes in all classes.

-Complete all homework assignments and commit to at least two hours of homework every night.

-10 hours of community service per semester.

-Promote a positive image of PHS and the AVID

program to fellow students and the community.

-Attend summer school for two years.

Teacher Responsibilities:

-Instruct students in AVID methodologies.

-Monitor student progress in all classes.

-Offer academic support via tutoring and academic interventions.

-Prepare students for college entrance.

 

Parent Responsibilities:

-Monitor student work habits.

-Monitor student attendance.

-Collaborate with the AVID teacher to ensure student success.

-Attend AVID meetings.
